After the invention of the printing press, the industrial revolution and the rise of computer technology we have now entered the age of artificial intelligence (AI) and the merging of humans, machines and the internet. To make this possible, 5G networks are currently being set up. The innovations of the past century have brought us much. Production, transport, communication networks, software, hardware: we can no longer imagine life without the modern conveniences that have been made possible.
It is becoming increasingly clear that these modern conveniences have downsides. The most commonly used consumer goods come from hardware and software companies that collect personal data and therefore build enormous power. It is also not clear to everyone how technologies work, which means that people are sometimes at the mercy of unclear conditions.
The drive to make money and maintain a competitive position often drives companies to implement new developments as quickly as possible. The long-term consequences are not always taken into account. For example, it is not yet clear what consequences new frequencies in wireless networks have for living beings, while there are reasons to properly investigate this before large-scale implementation is carried out.
Furthermore, the benefits of innovations are often not fairly distributed: employees who help to implement innovations within companies do not benefit from this themselves. In fact, they may become redundant as a result.
In a healthy society, technology works for people. We as humanity have come to a point where we need to find out who and what is behind these technologies.
Technology belongs to all of us and should not be in the hands of multinationals, especially where it concerns technology on which society builds. Frij Fryslân stands for open software and technology that can be checked by anyone and for openly informing everyone.
